The Boston Celtics have been sold for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, making it the most expensive sale in NBA history. The deal surpasses the previous North American sports record of $6.05 billion set by the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023.
The buyer is Bill Chisholm, co-founder and managing partner of Symphony Technology Group. A lifelong Celtics fan from Massachusetts, Chisholm has pledged to uphold the franchise’s winning culture and deep connection to the Boston community.
The Grousbeck family, which bought the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million, made the decision to sell due to estate and family planning reasons. Despite the sale, Wyc Grousbeck is expected to remain CEO and governor through the 2027-28 season to oversee a smooth transition.
The transaction is still subject to NBA Board of Governors approval, which could take several months. Meanwhile, the Celtics remain strong contenders for another championship, with star Jayson Tatum expressing optimism about the team’s future under new ownership.
