In a sweeping crackdown on organized crime, Turkish authorities have carried out one of the largest anti-narcotics operations in the country’s history, dealing a serious blow to regional and international drug networks. A total of 234 individuals have been arrested, and more than 21 tons of drugs along with €300 million in cash and assets were confiscated in the nationwide sting.

Operation “Tornado”: Coordinated Raids Across the Country
Codenamed “Operation Tornado”, the operation unfolded simultaneously across Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Diyarbakir, and several other provinces. Armed units, helicopters, and surveillance drones were deployed to assist in the raids. Police discovered secret drug labs, stash houses, and underground warehouses filled with narcotics ready for distribution.
According to the Turkish Minister of Interior, the suspects include high-ranking members of powerful international drug syndicates. He described the operation as a “historic step forward in dismantling organized crime.”
Luxury Goods, Weapons, and Millions in Cash Seized
In addition to the massive haul of narcotics, authorities also seized:
- Dozens of luxury cars and high-value real estate,
- Over €300 million in multiple currencies,
- Firearms, ammunition, and forged documents.
Officials have stated that the seized funds and property will be frozen and legally confiscated. Several suspects are under investigation for money laundering and transnational organized crime.
International Drug Network Exposed
Early findings suggest the cartel has ties stretching into the Balkans and the Middle East, using Turkey as a key transit hub for smuggling drugs into Europe. Traffickers allegedly exploited both land and maritime routes, often using falsified customs paperwork and compromised checkpoints to move large shipments undetected.
Further Arrests Expected
The investigation is still active, with officials warning that more arrests may follow in the coming days. Turkish law enforcement is now collaborating with Europol and Interpol to track down suspects believed to be operating abroad or in hiding.
This operation sends a clear message: Turkey is escalating its war on drugs and organized crime, and criminal networks—no matter how powerful—are no longer safe from prosecution.
