A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar today, sending shockwaves across the region and causing widespread panic. The quake, which hit near Mandalay, one of Myanmar’s largest cities, led to significant structural damage, including the partial collapse of the historic Ava Bridge.
The tremors were so powerful that they were felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, where buildings swayed and an under-construction skyscraper collapsed, killing at least two people and trapping others. Rescue teams are racing against time to reach those affected.
Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in several regions and has called for international aid to assist in recovery efforts. The earthquake also affected parts of China’s Yunnan province, causing injuries and damaging buildings.
With rescue operations still underway, authorities are working to assess the full extent of the devastation.
